CINEMA PARADISO

1:50pm Sat, November 21st

Still rapturous after all these years, Cinema Paradiso stands as one of the great films about movie love.” – Washington Post

OUR HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF 1990

WINNER 1989 ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST FOREIGN FILM

Long-time North Park audiences will remember the year that CINEMA PARADISO claimed ownership of our marquee, running for months on end in 1990.

As an ode to neighborhood cinemas, CINEMA PARADISO is especially poignant now in 2020.

Featuring an achingly beautiful score by the late, great Ennio Morricone.

Young Salvatore Di Vita (Salvatore Cascio) discovers the perfect escape from life in his war-torn Sicilian village: the Cinema Paradiso movie house, where projectionist Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) instills in the boy a deep love of films.

When Salvatore grows up, falls in love with a beautiful local girl (Agnese Nano) and takes over as the Paradiso’s projectionist, Alfredo must convince Salvatore to leave his small town and pursue his passion for filmmaking.

BABETTE’S FEAST

4:30pm Sat, November 21st

“There never was such a meal on the screen.
– The Times

OUR HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF 1988

WINNER 1987 ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST FOREIGN FILM

At once a rousing paean to artistic creation, a delicate evocation of divine grace, and the ultimate film about food, the Oscar-winning Babette’s Feast is a deeply beloved treasure of cinema.

Directed by Gabriel Axel and adapted from a story by Isak Dinesen, it is the lovingly layered tale of a French housekeeper with a mysterious past who brings quiet revolution in the form of one exquisite meal to a circle of starkly pious villagers in late nineteenth-century Denmark.

Babette’s Feast combines earthiness and reverence in an indescribably moving depiction of sensual pleasure that goes to your head like fine champagne. (Janus Films)
