Leon Vitali was a rising British television actor when Stanley Kubrick picked him for the role of Lord Bullingdon in Barry Lyndon. That first encounter with the famed auteur proved decisive — he swiftly resolved to devote the rest of his life working for the director, this time behind the scenes, and took on just about every job available: casting director, acting coach, location scouter, sound engineer, color corrector, A.D., promoter, and eventually restorer of Kubrick’s films.

Tony Zierra’s affecting documentary profiles the devoted “filmworker” — Vitali’s preferred job title — as he enthusiastically recounts his days with the notoriously meticulous, volatile and obsessive director. The experiences brought both tremendous sacrifice and glowing pride. Filmworker celebrates the invisible hands that shape masterpieces, reminding us that behind every great director, there is a Leon Vitali. – Telluride Film Festival

From Warner Brothers Pictures:

When worldly, middle-aged professor Humbert Humbert (James Mason) rents a room from widowed Charlotte Haze (Shelly Winters), he quickly becomes obsessed with her young daughter, Lolita (Sue Lyon). Humbert goes so far as to marry Charlotte to be close to her daughter, but when Charlotte discovers her husband’s secret lust, the knowledge leads to her death. Now free to pursue his obsession with his willing, under-aged stepdaughter, Humbert seduces Lolita, unable to control a lust that will destroy him.

BARRY LYNDON 4K RESTORATION

“BARRY LYNDON must be one of the most beautiful films ever made.”
– Roger Ebert

Join us for Stanley Kubrick’s picaresque 1975 masterpiece, restored in 4K and projected onto the BIG SCREEN!

Featuring mesmerizing, naturally lit cinematography by frequent Kubrick collaborator John Alcott, BARRY LYNDON needs to be experienced in theater to be fully appreciated.

As Martin Scorsese once said:

“I’m not sure if I can say that I have a favourite Kubrick picture, but somehow I keep coming back to Barry Lyndon. I think that’s because it’s such a profoundly emotional experience. The emotion is conveyed through the movement of the camera, the slowness of the pace, the way the characters move in relation to their surroundings. People didn’t get it when it came out. Many still don’t.

Basically, in one exquisitely beautiful image after another, you’re watching the progress of a man as he moves from the purest innocence to the coldest sophistication, ending in absolute bitterness – and it’s all a matter of simple, elemental survival. It’s a terrifying film because all the candlelit beauty is nothing but a veil over the worst cruelty. But it’s real cruelty, the kind you see every day in polite society.”

From BFI:

Legendary director Stanley Kubrick’s tenth feature film is one of Kubrick’s finest and most influential films and has been named as one of the greatest films ever made in polls including Sight & Sound and Time.

In this adaption of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel about the exploits of an 18th century Irish adventurer, Ryan O’Neal stars as Redmond Barry (later Barry Lyndon) and Marisa Berenson is Lady Lyndon. Among the great supporting cast are Patrick McGee, Hardy Krüger, Diana Koerner, Leon Vitali, Steven Berkoff, Murray Melvin and Leonard Rossiter.

Only a cinema screen can do justice to the stunning visuals of Barry Lyndon. Kubrick went to incredible lengths in his research of the period in order to re-create it accurately. Inspired by painters such as Thomas Gainsborough and William Hogarth, the film has a beautiful, painterly look, enhanced by filming in natural or historically accurate light sources. Some scenes were lit only by candlelight, captured by the super-fast lenses of Oscar®-winning cinematographer John Alcott.
